2. The glazing: 80% of the solution

A good pane of glass is no use if air slips through the joints. This measures the window’s “airtightness”.
Look for Class 4, which is the highest level according to European regulations. Say goodbye to draughts and noise from the street.
4. The frame: wider = more savings
Wider profiles (frames) (from 60 mm to 80 mm or more) aren’t just aesthetic. They allow thicker panes and more internal air chambers to be fitted, improving overall insulation.
5. The small giants: fittings and seals
They’re the big forgotten items. Poor-quality fittings or seals will ruin the whole system.
- EPDM seals: ask for rubber seals to be made from EPDM. They last much longer and seal better than TPE.
- Robust fittings: ensure a perfect, durable closure, maintaining the correct pressure on the seals.
The critical point: a poor installation ruins your investment
You can buy the most expensive and efficient window on the market (with a very low U Value, triple glazing and Argon gas)... but if it’s installed incorrectly, it’s like buying a Ferrari and fitting it with bicycle tyres. A professional installation is as important as the window itself. It must guarantee:
- A perfect perimeter seal so there are no thermal bridges with the wall.
- Correct levelling so the fittings work without being forced.
- An insulated roller shutter box. This is the black hole of efficiency. If you change the window but leave the old shutter box, you still have a problem.
Bottom line: don’t take chances. Trust only professional, experienced installers.
Not all the windows in your home are the same

- North-facing (the “fridge”): here you need the maximum possible thermal insulation (lowest U Value).
